LAGOS – Sir Temple Ogueri Onyeukwu, the Director and Proprietor of Excellent Foundation College, has raised the alarm over the state of insecurity, especially the kidnapping of students in institutions of learning in some parts of the country.
Onyeukwu who spoke on the sideline of the school’s valedictory/prize giving day on Saturday, July 31, 2021, lamented that due to insecurity several schools had closed down, especially those with boarding facilities, while the academic calendar had been affected.
He called on the government at all levels to seriously monitor the schools and ensure that enough security is provided in educational institutions, especially those with boarding houses, lamenting that terrorism had infiltrated into the society so much, while banditry, kidnapping and abductions had become the order of the day.
These, he said, had put the lives of the people, including parents, students and teachers at risk, while educational facilities were being vandalised.
Onyeukwu said, “It is sad that terrorism in the form of insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and abductions has infiltrated the society so much. It needs long term intelligence by the government and security agencies to control it.
“The schools should not be allowed to close down completely. If that is allowed, then it means the terrorists have succeeded since, in the first place, they do not want western education.
On how the school had been coping with the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Onyeukwu said the school management ensured that everyone entering the school, including students, staff, parents and other visitors obey the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) protocols, including the use of hand sanitisers, face masks and social distancing.
So far, there has not been any incident. During the lockdown, there were online teachings, with the staff making a lot of sacrifices. We had extended classes to ensure that we maintained the quality of studies,” he added.
To ensure standard, Onyeukwu the College that was established in 2003 and given full registration in 2007, made it a policy that all the teachers are graduates, who are also disciplined, as emphasis has always been on giving the students quality education
